poor children educated and street children rehabilitated and loved

Grassroots supports two related projects just outside Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. Good Neighbours in Theta and Watu wa Maana Street Children’s Rehabilitation and Reintegration Centre in Ruiru.

Good Neighbours

Theta is a difficult to access dusty and run-down area just off the main road but cut off by a river and fields that flood regularly. Despite being close to the economic heart of East Africa the people here are a million miles away in every other sense.

Pastor George Kibe leads Good Neighbours church and ministry, who serve as Grassroots’ partners in the community organising the child sponsorship programme.

George and his team have a heart to support the poor families in their area. In the early days of Good Neighbours there were no schools in Theta and so they started one, called El Shaddai – later renamed “Judah Excellence”. As the years have gone by Theta has been developed a bit (and is sometimes now called Juda) and government schools have got going. This has meant that the sponsored children almost all attend one of the local government schools, although a few are still transitioning out of Judah Excellence. The child sponsorship scheme helps children to receive education who would otherwise be unable to learn and gives them extra nutrition and pastoral support by providing regular feeding programmes at the church.

Sponsorship

Child sponsorship with Good Neighbours, costs £5 per month. The children all attend a local school where they receive:

  • school fees,
  • school equipment,
  • school uniform,
  • regular clubs at the church,
  • extra food

Sponsorship Plus allows you to overpay an extra monthly amount and this money will be used for additional support, perhaps unusual medical needs or as a buffer when currency fluctuations go against us.

Watu Wa Maana

The Watu Wa Maana Children’s centre is a base for the rehabilitation of the many street kids and orphans in Ruiru district. Children are initially housed in the centre, a converted pub, and then efforts are made to support their return to the care of their familes or relatives. This is our most expensive sponsorship because it is the most comprehensive. The centre provides full board and lodging, care and a social worker who traces and works with the childs for it’s rehabilitation. We are not the only supporters of Watu but have been working with the team there since 2004.

Sponsorship

Child sponsorship at Watu wa Maana, Kenya costs £20 per month. This sponsorship helps to provide:

  • school fees and school uniform if necessary
  • full board and accommodation for those in the centre
  • access to medical care

Grassroots also support other care activities at the centre.

Trips

Volunteer teams from Grassroots visit the Kenya projects each year, usually in May or June. They interview the children and enrol more onto the scheme. It is an awesome experience that has changed the worldview of many. We take people from 18 to 80.
