What a wonderful experience we had registering new sponsored children. We were at the new feeding program up in the hills of Tukuyu. We were greeted with singing and dancing by the children. Some had never seen white faces before.
Little teddy bears were handed out to each child. This helped the children not to be so scared by our pale ghost like appearance. As we did the initial interview with each child (with a translator and and a parent/guardian) we were told some very sad stories. So much HIV! The signs of malnutrition and the other underlying parasites and deseases were visible on the skin of the children.
Hospitality! It was incredible. We were all very humbled. We were fed, watered and given gifts of bananas, eggs and potatoes.
The journey to Tukuyu is stunning. Rolling hills and green vegetation – simply beautiful! We were a very thoughtful group as we trundled back through this beautiful place having met such beautiful people… but their lives are so hard!
We arrived back at Airport location (in Mbeya) to see crowds of women and children. Over 200 people had come asking for help. Many had been waiting for 4 hours. We have already taken on more children then we intended and, sadly, at the moment we cannot take on any more no matter how needy. The only way is to have more sponsors. That, and we would need to increase our team who run things in Tanzania. Richard says it is possible. But we all know it is cash that would make all the difference.
It was hard to tell them we could not help. They asked us to let people know that they needed help. So… this is me doing that!
It’s been a long day. We will be glad of a slower pace tomorrow. We will be visiting the different feeding programes and doing a final day of interviews with the children.
Most of team now in bed. I should be too! Everyone is very tired!
